The main image is often the first and only thing a shopper looks at before clicking. Marketplaces know this, which is why most of them ask for a clean product on a pure white background. You don't need a studio or a designer: a phone, a window and a free tool are enough. This guide covers shooting, marketplace rules and processing many photos at once.
Marketplace image rules at a glance
Amazon has the strictest rules for the main product image, and following them also works well on other marketplaces:
- Pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255)
- The product should fill about 85% of the image
- At least 1000 pixels on the longest side (larger images let shoppers zoom in)
- Show only the product: no extra text, logos, watermarks or props
- A square image (for example 2000 × 2000 pixels) displays best in search results
Shopify, Etsy, eBay and most local marketplaces are less strict, but a consistent, white-background, square main image looks more professional in any store.
Each marketplace updates its rules from time to time. Check the current image requirements in your seller help center.
How to shoot product photos with a phone
- Use daylight. Put a table next to a large window. Soft daylight without direct sun gives even light with gentle shadows.
- Use a plain background. A sheet of white paper or card curved up behind the product (a "sweep") gives the AI a clean edge to work with.
- Fill the frame, but leave some space around the product so nothing is cut off.
- Keep the camera steady and at the same height and angle for every product. Consistency makes your store look professional.
- Don't use digital zoom. Move closer instead.
- Clean the product before shooting. Dust and fingerprints show up clearly on a white background.
Make one product photo
For a single product, use the Product Photo Maker:
- Upload your product photo.
- Choose the size: for example the Amazon preset (2000 × 2000), Instagram, or a smaller square.
- Set the margin. Around 7% makes the product fill roughly 85% of the frame.
- Choose the background color (pure white for marketplaces) and a shadow:
- Ground: a soft contact shadow under the product, so it looks like it's standing on a surface.
- Soft: a gentle shadow all around.
- None: the cleanest look.
- Download a JPG (recommended for marketplaces) or PNG.
Process your whole catalog at once
Have 20, 50 or 200 products? The Bulk Background Remover handles them in one go:
- Select or drag in all your product photos at once.
- Choose the output "Product photo: 2000 × 2000, white, centered". Each product is cut out, centered on a white square with even margins, and saved as a JPG.
- Click Remove backgrounds and keep the page open while it works (about 4–10 seconds per image).
- Download each image, or all of them as one ZIP file.
There's no batch limit and no watermark, so you can redo your whole store's images in an afternoon.
Tips for a professional-looking store
- Same margin and size for every product, so your listings line up neatly in search results.
- Use the main image for the product only. Put lifestyle shots, size charts and close-ups in the extra image slots.
- Show the real color. Avoid filters, and shoot in daylight so white looks white.
- Name your files with product names or SKUs before uploading. It makes managing your catalog much easier.
