Essay with a minimum word count, social post with a character limit, meta description for Google: most of the time you need to know how long a text is. A word counter does the counting for you. This guide shows how to count words and characters online, how counting methods differ, and which lengths are typical for which purpose.
How to count words and characters online
- Open the Word Counter.
- Type or paste your text.
- Words, characters, sentences and paragraphs update live.
Counting happens in your browser. Your text is not uploaded or saved, and you need no account.
Characters: with or without spaces?
An online character counter usually gives two numbers:
- Characters with spaces: every character, including spaces, punctuation and line breaks. Most limits (X, SMS, meta descriptions) use this one.
- Characters without spaces: only visible characters. Some universities and translation agencies quote lengths this way.
Check which one your requirement means. For English text the difference is roughly 15 to 20 percent.
How are words counted?
A word is normally a run of characters separated by spaces or line breaks. So:
- Hyphenated words like "well-known" count as one word.
- Numbers like "2026" count as a word.
Word, Google Docs and other programs count slightly differently for footnotes, headers or special characters, so leave a small buffer when a limit is tight.
Typical lengths
| Purpose | Rule of thumb |
|---|---|
| Meta title (Google) | up to about 60 characters |
| Meta description | up to about 155 to 160 characters |
| Post on X | 280 characters |
| Instagram caption | up to 2,200 characters |
| Cover letter | 250 to 400 words |
| Blog article (SEO) | usually 800 to 1,500 words |
These are guidelines. The requirement from your school, platform or client always wins.
Reading and speaking time
Reading time is the word count divided by reading speed. Our tool uses 225 words per minute, so a 900-word text takes about 4 minutes. For speeches and videos, speaking time matters more: roughly 130 words per minute.
